About the photographer/artists equipment

My current photographic system is based around the Sony Alpha 700 & 100 DSLRs, both with APS-C sensors, but would love to be able to afford a full frame camera such as the Sony A900. I initially chose Sony over the products of Nikon and Canon etc, because the anti-shake was built into the body of the camera, rather than each lens - it also fitted my hands well, and the balance and controls were instinctive, and "felt right". The A700 was purchased some 2 years later.

I have come to find a number of camera supports and mounts of use, dependant on the type of photography being undertaken. My main tripod of choice is a Manfrotto Pro unit (055XB tripod c/w 804RC2 & 486RC2 heads). I sometimes use home-made monopods, and have made good use of a suction mount device, which holds well on vehicles. When doing macro work, I have a slide mount/rail for precise camera positioning. The Manfrotto tripod is sturdy enough for the limited HD video work I undertake periodically.

My current lenses lenses cover everything from 10mm to 500mm, & are from Sigma. The main two lenses I use, are the 18-200 and the 10-20mm. I also have the 170-500 for some wildlife work, and a 105mm F2.8 DG for portraits and still life. When undertaking macro work I have the choice of either a set of SRB-Griturn extension tubes or, for my really close up photography, I fall back on a Soligor 70-200 zoom M42 fit, mounted on a bellows which has been adapted to the Sony fit - obviously, this is only operable in manual mode, and is very much trial and error in operation - especially outdoors where the light is constantly changing - but I have had some nice results.

My carry bags, are from Lowepro, the most used, is my Lowepro Computrekker backpack - one of the best investments I've made - a superb bit of kit for my needs, but it has been much adapted for my purposes, and is now far from being 'as supplied'.

In the studio - Lighting is based around a number of portable flash heads from Sony, Vivitar and Sunpak, triggered by various means, with a small collection of lighting aids and modifiers, both home made and purchased, making up the rest of the small studio equipment. Processing takes place on both PC and Apple, using Lightroom, Aperture, Photoshop CS5, Topaz and a few other programs. Printing is via Epson 3800 (up to A2) after test printing first on a Lexmark 800. Video and sound processing takes place withing CS5, with final production of film and shows being done in either Premiere or Proshow Gold.

Other equipment worthy of mention? - Lighting outdoors, my 15 million candlepower torch is mighty useful. Transport is a 4x4 to get me to where I need to be reliably - and that has strong headlights, and a good sunroof to give me a bit of extra elevation when out and about! My wet gear and shelter is whatever is to hand on the day, but a good pruning saw is often handy for many purposes!

I've also built some of my own photo equipment - details on trial pages are in preperation
